Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.3; WOW64; Trident/7.0; .NET4.0E; .NET4.0C; .NET CLR 3.5.30729; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; .NET CLR 3.0.30729; rv:11.0) like Gecko

Steps to reproduce:

Archive multiple messages (at once or one after another, doesn't matter)

BTW:
I use an IMAP mailbox from FastMail

Actual results:

Some messages are archived to the "Archive" folder (selected an IMAP folder), others are archived to the folder "Archive/<year>".

Expected results:

All messages should have been moved to the "Archive" folder, since I setup the options "Archiving messages to a single folder" and I unchecked "Keep folder structure".
Not sure if this addition may be usefull, but:

I selected 3 messages from my inbox and hit "a" (Archive shortcut)
> 2 of them moved to "Archive/2015", the other to "Archive"
> I then moved the 3 messages back to the inbox and hit "a" again
> Now all 3 messages were moved to "Archive/2015"

Can't seem to find out which messages are moved to either folder...
I don't remember where we are putting archive bugs :(
Component: Untriaged → Account Manager
Were all messages originally received into the source folder/account? Or were some moved there prior to attempting archive?

All messages were received directly into the inbox (only one account) via IMAP.

Are you still seeing this in version 38?

Hello Wayne,

Thanks for your follow up!
Yes, unfortunately, I still have this annoying bug…
I’m running v38.3.0 now.

Hope it could end some day :-)
If you need further info, I’m at your service!

Hello,

Shamefaced, I have to tell you I no longer have problems with my Archiving structure (as described above)... I just discovered these settings were identity related. I didn't see this very clearly in the settingsmenu > when I go to Options > Account Settings > Copies & folders > Archive settings > it's not very clear (to me) this is about the default identity, but other identities can have different settings. When struggling a bit with signatures (working only when sending from my work-mail and not when sending from my private mail), I figured out that different settings can be made for each identity.

So in my case, the settings for the default identity were just fine, but for other identities they were set to archive using the year-based-structure. Stupid I didn't notice earlier that the difference in behavior was a split between work/private mails.

I'm sorry I made you search for this "bug" while it was just me not knowing the exact way to set up Thunderbird!

Sincerely,

      Peter

P.S.: maybe one thing can be learned from this: To me the structure for doing the settings for the different identities isn't that clear. Might get refined in the future!?
Thanks for the update
