Once the patches for:
Bug 1166538 - Use mozbuild.jar-based zip tool instead of $(ZIP) for simple cases
Bug 1166550 - Add support for -x to mozbuild.jar-based zip tool and use it
have landed, it should be fairly simple to port them for Thunderbird and SeaMonkey

The only place I found $(ZIP) still in use is in Suite code:
comm/suite/app/Makefile.in:$(ZIP) -r9mX ../$(dir).xpi * -x \*/.mkdir.done; \

Moving to Seamonkey product.
