Received this feedback from Martin Benjamin during the recent localization sprint in Bamako, Mali. According to Martin the correct translation for download is 'Pakua' not 'Daunlodi'. The phrase 'Daunlodi' is used in Firefox OS settings app. pakua vs daunlodi ================== Googling "daunlodi" (with quotes) gives a few very suspicious results for porn and mp3 downloads, and the rest of the hits are for "Dan Lodi" or other irrelevant items. On the other hand, this Google search gives 83,000 results, with "downloading" being the predominate sense: "pakua" "kutoka" The reason for searching with "kutoka" is to make sure we are getting only Swahili, and to steer our search to the meaning of "download from". For most Swahili searches, the word "kwenye" is a good way to restrict the search to Swahili, but in this case "kutoka" narrows it down to a specific meaning. This is an important trick, because most Swahili documents are not correctly tagged, so using "kwenye" or "kutoka" filters away documents from most other languages that might contain a word spelled the same way as your search term (for example, searching for "China" will give you very few Swahili results, but searching for china + "kwenye" will magically narrow down to articles with Swahili).
This is very important feedback and thank you Arky for sharing. While we were translating with my fellow L10ners we were only looking at the easy-of-conveying meaning to users. We had actually not thought of the Google angle of things and uniqueness of searches of narrowing down to Swahili only items. We will try to make the changes in the current release and incorporate in future ones too.
Can't find any reference to "daunlodi". It looks like terminology is not really consistent though: Vipakuzi, Upakuzi, kupakua.
