Automatic fetching of POP3 mail hangs mailnews. There seems to be two kinds of failures: 1) The progress indicator and Mozilla icon animate but nothing further can happen. This is the most common kind. 2) The Mac freezes. Further action is only possible by hardware reset. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Send mail to the person so there will be a message waiting. 2. Configure mailnews to fetch mail at 1 minute intervals. 3. Start mailnews. Actual Results: The mailnews window will hang even though the log on the POP3 server will show that the message was correctly removed. Expected Results: Progress meter/Mozilla icon should stop animating and the mail should be delivered. Using RedHat 7.2 with imap-2000c-15 RPM as POP3 server.

Yeah, and it gets worse -- now Mozilla *crashes*.
I cannot find any other bug with that. Please try a clean installation with a new profile. If it still happens, please provide talkback data. pi
It crashes the Mac. Talkback data would be hard to come by.

I got a hang today with the news. No crash. Just the progress indicator running There was no mail pending on the server. This ocurred when i tried the "Go offline" Solution: Quit and restart Mozilla Mac OS 9.1 Build 2002021103
I can confirm this Bug on a Win NT 4.0 (SP6a, German) System with Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; WinNT4.0; en-US; rv:1.0.0) Gecko/20020530) with slight modifications: Automatic fetching of POP3 mail SOMETIMES hangs the Inbox of mailnews, i.e. the sandclock shows and mail isn't retrieved - the rest is still accessible Fetching upon request seems to work always!

You are perfectly right, I also don't see anything with Linux. But there is no other way to mark a combination of various OSes other than all. pi
Changing the severity. I don't see this problem using 2002-07-02 commercial build on win98. WFM Reporter, Is this still happening on the recent builds?

Can't say for anything other than MacOS 9.1. Others are reporting similar- sounding problems.
I can't reproduce this on Mac OS 9.2.2.
This sounds similar to the behaviour I'm seeing. I have an IMAP account to my Outlook mailbox, with "check for new messages" set to 1 minute. I also have a POP3 account, with "check for new messages" set to 10 minutes. The IMAP one works fine, but the POP3 one checks once or maybe twice, then doesn't check again for a few hours. Even clicking "get new mail for..." doesn't work. Even though there are messages there (confirmed with webmail), they're not downloaded. This is observed on Mozilla 1.0 (Build ID 2002053012) on Windows 2000.
Checked behavior again but now with a different local directory setting. Until now I had my mail-dir set to a SAMBA-directory. This setting made the described problems. Now chenaged it to a local hard disk and the phenomenon didn't appear again since over 2 days! so it seems to me that this bug has sth to do with the bug i found in the 'Known problems' notes of 1.1 beta: ------------------8<------------------------------ Mozilla does not warn the user of a low disk space condition. (Bugs 32443, 56565) Some symptoms you may see are: * [...] * POP: Status text indicates there are new messages to retrieve, but no new messages appear in the Inbox. Reporter, Look into bug 142196 when checking mail fails if your profiles are on the network drive. Is your profile local? If so then this could be the same problem as the other bug.
I have the same problem as described in comment 20 by James Tait (tried several variants of Mozilla 1.0.1, 1.0.2, and 1.1 on a WinNT 4.0 Sp6a system). Mail directory is on a Samba share with still 2.5 GB free so it shouldn't be the diskspace bug. POP3 server is a Linux box (Suse 6.4), changing from QPOP 2.53 to qpopper 4.0.3 didn't solve the problem. netstat doesn't show connections to the pop3 port neither on the client nor on the server. Strangely enough, Netscape 7 works fine ...
Please forget my previous remark concerning Netscape 7: I just encountered a hang with Netscape 7, too :-(

DEC PWS600au, Alpha EV56 OpenVMS V7.2-2 1GB RAM ample disk space Mozilla 1.3 Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; OpenVMS Digital_Personal_WorkStation_; en-US; rv:1.3) Gecko/20030313 Mozilla hangs all windows when performing a POP3 download from any of several ISPs (Earthlink and Speakeasy normally). The hang can occur in the middle or after getting the 'received # messages'; in the latter case the messages have been saved locally and deleted from the ISP server; in the former some messages are saved locally but all are still present on the ISP server. The window frame control are responsive; the window can be minimized or re-opened using the frame widgets. Menus open but selecting a menu item does nothing. Window contents are not refreshed; if an occluding window is moved in front of a Mozilla window, then removed, the contents of the occluding window remain visible. The Mozilla process goes runaway, using up all idle CPU. No other system functions or windows are impacted excepting some performance impact. It appears that the process is in a tight loop, but there are no busy channels, (the process is not waiting on any particular device or I/O source). Generally the process can be interrupted from the starting terminal window (CTRL-Y and EXIT) but on some occasions it requires killing the process (STOP/IDENT=########). This problem did not occur with any previous versions of Mozilla (used 0.9.8, 1.0, 1.1, 1.2.1 finals on this system without problems); problem started with installation of 1.3. A reinstall was performed. A test to a new user account (with corresponding new profile, but using the same email accounts and ISPs) was performed with the same results.

With the Thunderbird on Mac, I confirmed that the system freeze happens. The only way to be out from the freeze, you should reset the computer.

I've been using Firefox and Thunderbird for at least a couple of years now and Ubuntu Linux exclusively for a good six months or more. I haven't seen this behaviour in that time.
I don't see this problem anymore. It seems to be solved. However, I may not check problems in the Thunderbird and the Firefox anymore. I switched my default web browser and emailer to the Safari and the Mail. I like the Mozilla-based products are better in terms of their features. However, I noticed serious slow-down of my computer when I once launch them. If I quit them, somehow my computer is still slow. If I don't launch them after rebooting, my computer is fast. Yeah.. I know that it is off-topic.. but.. However probably, I keep using them on my Windows machine, though.
