This is problematic because we have many users who used Lightning.

From which minor version of TB 31 did you upgrade to TB 38? Can you please check whether you have a distribution/extensions/{...}/ folder in your Thunderbird application directory (not the profile).

I did the upgrade from Thunderbird 31.2.0.
In my channel-prefs.js is set app.update.channel => release
-Before the upgrade i don't have distribution/extensions/{...}/ folder.
-After the upgrade i don't have distribution/extensions/{...}/ folder.

In my Thunderbird 31.2.0 for push Lightning extensions i used folder Mozilla Thunderbird/extensions/{id lightning add ons}/

See my screenshot in attachments.

Maybe you have disabled extension updates. Please go to Tools > Add-ons > Extensions, click the Tools button and manually start the update check.
Extension updates are not disable.
And even if i try go to Tools/Add-ons/Extensions and click to update extensions Thunderbird show "no update available"
I'm also seeing this error. The exact message is "The binary component required for Lightning could not be loaded, likely because the wrong version combination is being used. You currently have Lightning 4.0.0.1 installed, but should be using a version from the 4.0 series."

C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Thunderbird\distribution\extensions contains the version of Lightning included with Thunderbird 38.0.1 and there are no other versions installed. Add-on update checking is disabled however as the installation of add-ons is centrally managed in our environment. Client OS is Windows 7 x64.
That dialog usually shows up when the binary component could not be loaded. 4.0.0.1 is from the Lightning 4.0 series, so I am not sure why this is happening. Usually I'd ask to re-install Lightning from addons.mozilla.org, but since you say addons are centrally managed, I'd suggest having your adminiatrator look into it first.

I removed the version of Lightning included with Thunderbird and installed the version downloaded from addons.mozilla.org and it still throws the same error.
Can you also try reinstalling Thunderbird from https://www.mozilla.org/thunderbird/all/ ?
For me reinstalling Thunderbird is not solution because we have about 1000 clients.
Florent, the question was to help debugging to find the root cause for a single installation and not a support advise to apply for all of your installations. Can you confirm (with your admins) whether this is a custom build of TB for your organization or the official one provided by the mozilla.org website? Maybe providing the build id indicates this already.
Before we deploy 31.2.0 with official executable file from mozilla.org.
Update are automatically (in options of Thunderbird) and this problem appears after this update.

Florent,
Is it only happening when making the jump from 31 to 38?
Or do you also see this problem using current versions going from 38.n to 38.n+1?
Flags: needinfo?(florent.lagoda)
Improvements were made in version 38. Have you seen this making the jump from 38 to 45?
Summary: After upgrade Thunderbird 31 ESR to Thunderbird 38 Lightning calendar add-on is incompatible and disabled without warning and not purpose to upgrade Lightning add-on to version 4 → After upgrade Thunderbird 31 ESR to Thunderbird 38, Lightning calendar add-on is incompatible and disabled.
