quoting from the mailing list: Question: are you trying to power off?  Or are you sleeping the device?  Personally, I would rather have the instant black out which helps save on power when I sleep the phone by tapping on the power button.   Perhaps we can make this an option?
When the phone screen times out, not when I'm pressing the button but just when it's sitting idle, it just crashes straight to black without any fade whatsoever. This makes me think the phone just crashed and rebooted. iOS does an intermediate 'dim' state for a brief time before powering off the screen, which may help. But in general, for the same reason we fade in and out the search bar at the top, I would rather the phone fade in from and out to black screen rather than just hard cuts. Even just a quarter second of fade. It helps distinguish "normal behavior" from "crashed" and "ran out of battery".
Interestingly, my phone does fade after 50 seconds and goes to black after 60 seconds. I tested this behavior both plugged in and charging, and on battery only (47% full). Settings that might be relevant: I have my timeout set to 1 minute, brightness set manually.
I checked on my flame and z3c and both seem to have the same behaviour. After 50 seconds it starts to fade. It then fades for about 3 seconds to some dimmer value between being off and on. It then stays at that particular brightness for an additional 7 seconds at which point it turns off.

Also it would be nice that when you tap the power button to turn the screen on, that it would appear instantly, instead of the 300ms delay I seem to be getting, which makes it appear rather sluggish.
There's no STR for this bug so I'm just reporting what I see on Aries. When pressing hardware power button when on Homescreen: Screen turns off immediately without fading effect. When sitting idle on Homescreen: Screen dims when reaching 50 seconds, and turns off when reaching 60 seconds. This is true when timeout is set to 1 minute, and display brightness set to auto or manual. USB cabled was not connected during the tests. It is the same behavior on Flame master as stated in Comment 5 but I did not notice that when on the lockscreen there is no dim before going sleep. It just goes to sleep. To clarify, the screen does *turn off* as it should after the timer expires. However, it turns off *instantly*, either from full brightness (at the lock screen) or from dim brightness (at the home screen). I'm requesting that it turn off gradually (over a fraction of a second), rather than hard-cut from "whatever the current brightness is" to fully powered off. I did observe, while testing with a 1 minute timeout, that the following sequence occurs: 00-50: Screen at full brightness 50-59: Screen dims, gradually, from full brightness to dim brightness 60: Screen powers off And I'm suggesting that 60 should instead read: 60: Screen dims, gradually, from dim brightness to powered off.
