a while back I noticed that a Unicode demo page seemed cause the
font search code to run excessively

Shanjian: I think if you set NS_FONT_DEBUG and run this page you will see
that far too many fonts are opened.

Isn't this a duplicate of Bug#109885 ?
shanjian is no longer working on mozilla for 2 years and these bugs are still
here. Mark them won't fix. If you want to reopen it, find a good owner first.
