1180455 - Firefox freezes up seconds into playing a video on YT, basically freezes up my computer too, ever since updating to 39.

Steps to reproduce:

Played YT videos on 720p and 1080p after upgrading to FF39.
Moved through the timebar, would freeze up, seconds would pass, time would go to 0:00 and then result in  a black screen.

Computer is running on W7 64bit.


Actual results:

I included the memory level from task manager if that's useful in any way.(http://i.imgur.com/EYjqGv5.png) Even CTRL+ALT+DEL barely worked to open up task manager, my screen went black for a few seconds before I could pull that up and screenshot this before ending the process. That's how badly it's freezing, upon opening up a video link, every thing I do initially(expand the screen, hover over the time bar) has little to no input on the video player before it just stops and freezes everything.

Computer is running on W7 64bit.

Later I got this error code for the first time of a script not working with the options to debug it or stop it. Script: https://s.ytimg.com/yts/jsbin/…en_US-vflzomeEU/html5player.js:98

Then this weird thing happened playing in *480p*, it stopped and then it displayed different time frames at the bottom of the screen whenever I would scroll through it.(http://i.imgur.com/uLKTnuY.png) It wouldn't even let me print screen the screen when I was on this screen. I had to take out my phone.

Memory processing went into 2.5mil+ even due to, as I now know, Hardware Acceleration being on.


Expected results:

Disabling addons didn't solve it but disabling HWA did.

Awesome. Thanks for posting this.

When you're able please post the Graphics section from about:support (just type about:support into the location bar and hit enter, then copy and paste that section).

Also, did it crash and submit a crash report?  You can go to about:crashes and look at the dates and times to see if something is recent and corresponds with a crash.  If so please share the Report ID or link to it.

Here you go, though I don't know why it's still telling me to update the driver, I'm pretty sure I *just* did...but I guess I did the wrong thing somehow. ATI's website is funky for me.

And no, it never crashed during this, it just froze and I would stop poking at it and do nothing until it would unfreeze and the time would display 0:00 and go to a black screen. But, I would assume, if I kept on poking at it and clicking around while it was frozen it would've crashed and a report would've been made. Neither of those things happened though.

Update: Updating the graphics drivers on your computer, like I ultimately did for mine(http://i.imgur.com/mTDdcIS.png), did not fix it.

Unchecking Hardware Acceleration in Firefox's settings is what fixed it.

Although, it is still good to be updated to your graphic card's latest drivers regardless!

Great to see that fixed it for you, though it would be useful to investigate what caused it to happen in the first place. This will take several steps though so please let me know if you're willing to help.

Could you please test setting media.hardware-video-decoding.enabled to false in about:config (type this into the URL bar) rather than disabling hardware acceleration?

We should probably add a checkbox for that to the UI. Adding a needinfo for the reporter.
