Details
NB: for various reasons I expect we'll need to keep this behaviour for the in-content beforeunload dialogs.
It seems this behaviour (switching tabs / stealing focus like this) is considered annoying by many users. I expect it would be nice if we could instead highlight / add an icon to the tab in some way that made it clear that it was demanding attention, rather than outright stealing focus.

I suspect that many people would rely on Google Calendar stealing focus with its alert to inform users of an upcoming event. Can we come up with a solution that doesn't steal focus but which still makes the alert visually obvious if you're in another tab?
