This started in the nightly for July 8 as far as I can tell. I noticed the urlbar started behaving sluggishly, then Firefox suggested that Enter Selects was causing it to slow down. The problem went away when I disabled the addon.
I believe the default value for browser.urlbar.unifiedcomplete got flipped recently. Does changing that from about:config affect the sluggishness?
I had it in the non-default state (false); flipping it to true made the sluggishness go aware, at the cost of the silly new first entry that ruins my muscle memory.
your muscle memory shouldn't be ruined since the first entry is pre-selected, down goes to the same exact entry as before.
I was using Enter Selects to have the first entry be automatically selected, and the unified autocomplete added a new first entry for searching.
that just means the add-on needs an update. The entry added is not a new entry for searching, is just the default action executed when pressing enter.
This sounds like an issue with the add-on, which apparently got fixed: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/enter-selects/reviews/774714/ .
