Stefan, do you have layers.acceleration.enabled set to false in about:config? Or are you running in safe mode?
Flags: needinfo?(zweigmedia)
Aha! Setting layers.acceleration.disabled back to false seems to solve the issue for me! I had previously set layers.acceleration.disabled to "true" because, starting several versions ago, dark grey boxes were temporarily appearing on top of content in random places and disabling layers acceleration solved that issue (see my original report of this bug where I mentioned that fact). However, starting with FF 39, it looks like that setting created this new issue. At this point, with layers.acceleration.disabled = true, I no longer see those dark grey boxes either (so far!) so everything is good. Thank you!

Glad to hear it's working now. Indeed, disabling that pref is currently not working on OS X. You should get better performance with it on anyway :)
