Build ID: 2015063000

Steps to reproduce:

Updated from FF38 - FF39

Actual results:

The toobar icons were squashed together. The problem is there is now an add-on "save-to-pocket" icon automatically added to the toolbar. Clicking on it we are directed to sign up for yet another NEW ACCOUNT.

How do I completely disable/remove the pocket icon and backend for it?

Expected results:

There should NOT have been any new unwanted and unwelcomed add-ons added to the toolbar. We are all big boys and girls. If we want an add-on, we know where to find them.

What we want/need from Mozilla is a secure, light-weight browser that is consistent between versions, renders quickly and functions as a browser, not some slimy front-end to commercial add-on developers.

Users should not be forced to go digging through about:config on each new release just to turn off and disable all the unwanted and unnecessary **** that some new wet behind the ears dev thinks we all "just can't live without" -- we can, we want to.

Firefox has grown from a lean/powerful browser to a amorphous bloated disk and memory hog. In addition to removal of pocket api, or as an alternative to, Firefox should provide a lightweight addition that is just what Firefox used to be - a browser. Split the build into two parts, the base browser with all it core functionality and then a Firefox-Applications package for those who want the full install and don't care about dedicating 8-18% of their CPU to an idle browser window. Today's install was a whopping 40497839 compressed bytes for the Firefox package alone. Really.
It appears that Pocket no longer requires to create an account... if you have a Firefox account. That is great.

I am not concerned by drive space requirements. If Mozilla wants to make it really easy for Pocket users, that is great. But I have to agree that pushing Pocket on toolbars by default is extremely doubtful. I now see myself removing both Pocket and Hello buttons in each new profile, both at home and at the office.

I need to confess I never tried Pocket. Perhaps I would get used to using it. And I am one of those who desired a function like Pocket before Pocket even existed. Yet, I very much doubt a large portion of users will use Pocket. And I am not tempted to use a service which relies on a foreign corporation. I do not see many business users using Pocket.

For those who setup Pocket, automatically adding a button to the toolbar is fine. But for those who don't, please do not show that button. Pocket is quite related to bookmarks, why would we need 3 icons for bookmarking by default? In fact, looking at the bookmarks menu, I realize there is already a Pocket entry there. I have to agree with David, we do not need more *by default*. And if you keep it, at least make it super easy to figure what it's for ("Save to Pocket" is a cryptic description unless you know what Pocket is).

And on that, I'm removing the button for an n-th time.
I removed that icon several more times since my comment.

But I also noticed an interesting development from Microsoft, which added a Reading List to its new browser, Microsoft Edge, a feature similar to Pocket: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/getstarted-take-your-reading-with-you
I think this adds a button by default, but I would need to verify.
Pocket is not an add-on - in fact, ticket 1215694 requests to remove Pocket and make it a built-in addon.

This ticket should have Component set to Pocket.
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1172126#c34 reports that a benevolent observer found multiple vulnerabilities in Pocket. These are now resolved, but this suggests that "encouraging" users to user Pocket will likely cause privacy issues.

This reproduces with Firefox 42 or 43.

Abe, do not set resolution INCOMPLETE unless the ticket is actually incomplete.
I have somewhat re-opened this in ticket 1245340. That ticket does not request the full removal of Pocket integration.
