User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 5.1; rv:39.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/39.0
Build ID: 20150630154324

Steps to reproduce:

upgraded to 38.1.0
Environment: Win XP Pro, SP3

Actual results:

Unable to display and read text in messages sent prior to upgrade to 38.1.0

Unable to read text in new messages, unless the fonts are helvetica/ariel, Times, or Courier.

Unable to read older messages in sent folders.

My emails have been created using Optima and html settings. Sent emails don't display, although text in other fonts and attached images do display.

New emails display text only if composed in helvetica/ariel, Times, or Courier.

Are some types of fonts no longer functioning with Thunderbird? Does the program not find the fonts?

Expected results:

sent and new messages should display in specified font, instead text is invisible. Workaround: forward the email and change font to helvetica/ariel, Times, or Courier.
Please attach a screen shot using "Add an attachment".
Also, please start thunderbird in safe mode

Does problem go away?

Wayne, thanks for responding.

Safe mode does not solve the problem.

Alas, I cannot create a screen shot, paint thinks nothing in the clipboard to paste; I even tried a couple of add-ons.

When I open one of the older mails created with Optima font, only the enclosed image appears, the rest is blank.

However, when right-click and I select all, blue stripes that demarcate the text lines appear. When I copy and paste into anothe program, i.e. Gimp, the text appears.

When I forward the email and change the font, the text is visible.

So it seems like a display problem. Where does TB look for fonts? Can I define the path, if so how? Or is this a problem of the display/graphics engine not recognizing some font types?

Made photos of screen in place of screen shots, but your program rejects the file.jpg and don't know how to share with you.

make the image a PNG and it might be small enough. Otherwise, send me a link to the image - you can upload it to http://imagur.com/

one image of 3, this shows blank, where text does not display

"select all" displays areas where hidden text sits
same email, as forward, with font set to one of 3 that will display

Many other fonts installed on the PC. I suspect the new install doesn't know where to find the fonts, OR the graphics engine can't read some types of font files.
Are these adobe Type 1 fonts?
If so, ref bug 1179055

Thanks for identifying Type1 fonts as key to the issue.

I suspected that either TB 38.0.1 doesn't know where the fonts are stored, OR that the graphics engine has been revised in a way that Type 1 fonts are not processed.

I don't know enough about the graphics processor--if that is the correct term--and I don't know where in TB the font lists are stored; in css?
