Steps to reproduce:

Running Thunderbird 38.1.0, Windows 7 fully updated.  Thunderbird defaults to mail view.

As per https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/lightning-user-interface#w_switching-between-mail-tabs-and-lightning-tabs

"To switch between Mail tabs and Lightning tabs, you can choose one of the following ways:

    via the Lightning toolbar buttons on the tab bar"

I looked for toolbar buttons on the tab bar.


Actual results:

There are no toolbar buttons on the tab bar.


Expected results:

There should have been buttons on the tab bar that allow switching to Lightning tabs.

There appears to be no way to open the calendar.

Can you please check in the addons manager wether Lightning is installed and enabled? If yes, which version are you on and do you have any messages in the error log (ctrl+shift+j)?

Did you upgrade to TB38 from a previous version or is this a fresh installation?

Upgraded from previous version; we've been pretty good about keeping it up to date.  Previous version had Lightning installed and had the LightningButton extension installed.  It sees v regular usage in our house :)

Neither the extensions nor the Plugins menu shows Lightning installed.  The release notes state that Lightning is now bundled with Thunderbird.  ...should I try and reinstall the addon?

How did you install TB? Manual installation (in which profile - user or admin) or software distribution by admin staff?

Downloaded from the main site some time ago.  Installed as an administrator (and run as one).  It's upgraded itself since then...at least 3 automatic upgrades?

You can install it from within the addons manager for now. Please check whether the issue reappears after the next TB update and report back here.

Okay, THAT didn't work.

I got a lot of "Restart Thunderbird to finish installing etc" (didn't write down the exact message) - restarted 3 times, no change.  I finally restarted the entire computer.

This time, it showed lightning installed.......but while lightning is installed and not disabled, selecting Options (either by the regular menu, or Lightning's options from within the addon page) shows the "Security" tab with a blank page (i.e., options window pops up, security tab is selected, but nothing in the tab-window).  Disabling Lightning addon returns to normal functioning of the Options popup.

So...looks more subtle than just "didn't install automatically?"  Not sure where to go here...

This is all weired. Can you provide a screenshot of what you're expiriencing now with Lightning enabled as well as all messages you get in the error console after starting TB?

Which other addons do you have installed? Can you please restart TB with all addons but Lightning disabled?

If then the issue still persists, can you please start TB with a new profile [1] and have a look, whether the issue appears as well or Lightning gets installed automatically as expected?

OKaaaaaay.  I went to reenable Lightning, restarted Thunderbird, and lo!  Lightning no longer appeared in the addons menu!

Error log gives some interesting bits:

Thanks. It seems you're on Thunderbird's ta_LK locale. For Lightning, there's currently no such localization for TB 38. In theory, it is expected that you get the English locale instead, but something seems to go wrong.

To make sure, this is not related to something spefic to your setup, can you please install the en_US version of TB 38 from [1] and check whether that installs Lightning correctly for you?

This is Tamil/Sri Lanka. On what locale have you expected to be?

I *think* you TB profile with all of your data persits, but you should backup a copy to be safe.

The message doesn't indicate that you are using ta_LK localization. 

The error message indicates that new Lightning package cannot be installed because the removal of the previous Lightning package fails. Maybe some file attributes were changed or some other process prevents Thunderbird from accessing those file.

I would suggest to manually remove the Lightning package, i.e. the folder "C:\Users\Me\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\default.s1g\extensions\{e2fda1a4-762b-4020-b5ad-a41df1933103}". Your calendar data and settings will be kept because they are not stored in this folder. Afterwards the installation of the new Lightning package hopefully succeeds.

Manually removing the package does not help.  Once I try to add it again, I'm in the same boat: repeating loop of restart to finish installing the app.

I created a new profile.  The calendar showed up immediately.

Additional information:  When "restarting to finish installing", the extensions folder momentarily contains a folder {e2fda...., a folder "Trash" and the "staged" folder, that was there before.

FWIW, the error log is now throwing an error for lightning-sl\locale\sl instead:

Calendar add-on is now integrated with Thunderbird, so it is likely this issue should no longer occur and closing this bug report as a result.
