(Whiteboard: [lightning not automatically installed])
User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; Win64; x64; rv:38.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/38.1.0 Waterfox/38.1.0
Build ID: 20150607203535
Steps to reproduce:
Yesterday (July 24, 2015) after some fussing Lightning 4.0.1.2 finally installed to TB 38.1.0. Today it was gone again after a fresh reboot. Addons sats it "Will be installed after you restart" but it doesn't install even after many restarts.
Actual results:
Not able to access caledar although it states to restart to install. I also had trouble re-enabling HTML version (Google Calendar Tab 3.9) of the Gmail calendar which I use when Lightning falls out.
Expected results:
It should've come up as it always did prior to this TB mess that seems to have some problem accessing IMAP folders on Gmail. I don't know that the two are related or not but they maybe and therefore I'm mentioning them.

Do you have any errors in the error console (ctrl+shift+j)? Does this resolve, if you disable any other addons (which do you have?)?
Based on you browser signature above, I assume you're on Windows 7 64 bit - correct? How (software distribution or manual installation by admin staff or by user) and in which profile (user or admin profile) did Thunderbird get installed? Did you (or someone else) make a new installation of TB 38 or did you upgrade from a previous version?

Based on bug 1187495, I guss the issue is solved for you now?

OS: Unspecified → Windows 7
Hardware: Unspecified → x86_64
It's hard to answer your first question about errors because technically Lightning 4.0.1.2 is installed but stuck without being loaded. That being said I have:
Timestamp: 7/26/2015 4:04:24 PM
Error: no element found

I have 4 of the first error and screenfuls of the second.
Back about a week ago or so TB upgraded to 38.1.0 and I had no problems. Then on the 23rd I noticed a problem with my Trash folder. It was no longer collecting trash nor was it acting like a trash folder with an empty fuction. It just began appearing as a regular folder. Then on the 24 I turned on my computer in the morning and I loaded TB as I always do and everything looked fine. I started to do some searches regarding the errant trash folder problem and in the time I did that and came back to TB I saw my IMAP folders disappear in front of my eyes. I attempted to regress to a prior version of TB to get my folders back but with no success. So I am guessing something with gmail changed. I then resinstalled my current version of TB 38.1.0.
I didn't even realize the calendar issue till later in the day when I went to make a addition that I found that it wasn't even listed as an addon. When I attempted to install it nothing happened except a program from my tray had opened which I thought a bit strange. I attempted to install it again and again a program from my tray opened although this time it was a different program and not a regular sized window it was a tiny window which I was unable to interact with I had to open task manager to get rid of it.
I closed and reopened TB and attempted to install the calendar yet again. This time it came up with the box asking me to accept the installation or it would close. I accepted and nothing appeared to happen. I then decided to re-enable the HTML tab version of the Google Calendar and use it which I kept in my addon list disabled as it wasn't my favorite but in times of trouble I realized it might be valuable. After enabling it it gave me the restart to finish the install which I did and nothing it still said it was disabled. I restarted again this time Lightning appeared well I should say that the icon in the right hand corner of TB appeared and allowed me to open Lightning.
However when I restarted TB the next day, the 25th, it was gone again. But I was able to enable the HTML version of the calendar and it's remained functional at least till now.
I hadn't added any new addons to TB in months and maybe even years I just don't have a need for most of the TB addons although I use a few.
This is my personal computer and I am a computer professional by trade but I don't work on desktop or web applications although I can understand the logic behind them and event triggering.
I don't know that I can add much more than I still don't have my IMAP folders back and I can only hope that someone is working to fix what I call the TB mess. I did cc myself on what I thought was relevant but they're talking about keys which to me would mean no mail and I do get mail just that all my self-created folders are no longer showing in TB but they still show online in Gmail but my rules are on TB so it's definitely problematic.
OK so when I went back to disable all the other addons and see if that makes a difference I see that Lightning is installed???? I'm not sure what's going on. I was able to open the tab and I see Lightning but will it stay? I don't know.

What other addons do you have? On what version of Lightning are you now - look in the addons manager for this.
Regarding your imap issue: have you switched to OAuth2 with your Google account? Check out support.mozilla.org if you need guidance on this. But this is off topic for this bug.
I haven't changed anything other than an attempt to go back to a prior TB version. That includes oAuth and my TB addons. From my perspective I've done nothing to precipitate any of this.

Based on comment #4, this actually works for you meanwhile, so I'm closing this WFM for now.
But please keep an eye on whether Lightning gets updated for you once you updated to the next TB release 38.2.0. If you expirience any problem with that, please file a new bug and reference this one within.
