sciencefriday.com: look at the main article text below the ant image. Font is apparently Proxima Nova Semibold.

Many webfonts look absolutely terrible on Linux (Debian sid). I don't mean subtle issues with antialiasing, but that some letters look bold while some are so spiderweb-thin as to be almost invisible. These same pages look fine on Mac firefox, so it's something in the font rendering Firefox is doing for webfonts on Linux.

The only solution I've found is to block webfonts entirely, either by un-checking "Allow pages to choose their own fonts" or by setting gfx.downloadable_fonts.enabled to False in about:config.

Screenshot: look at "Big Free-tailed Bat" to the right of the image. Font is Muli.

The inspector says this is font Muli:
http://fonts.gstatic.com/s/muli/v7/z6c3Zzm51I2zB_Gi7146Bg.woff2
src: local("Muli"), url("http://fonts.gstatic.com/s/muli/v7/z6c3Zzm51I2zB_Gi7146Bg.woff2") format("woff2"), url("http://fonts.gstatic.com/s/muli/v7/kU4XYdV4jtS72BIidPtqyw.woff") format("woff");

Akkana, which version of Firefox are you using? Are you using any local adjustments to fontconfig settings?

If you could attach the contents of 'about:support' that would be helpful. Could you also include the URL's of the pages where you see the problem?

about:support output

Using Firefox 39.0. I don't knowingly have any local changes to fontconfig, but it's an old Debian install that's been updating for years. Would that be in /etc/fonts? I don't seem to have any local changes under that directory. Is there anywhere else I should look for fontconfig changes?

The URLs in my two screenshots are:

I thought I'd be clever and try to test it on a laptop that has a vanilla 12.04 Ubuntu installed, for comparison, but I can't get Firefox to load webfonts at all there; it just uses DejaVu Sans (which looks fine).
