Since being prompted to first enter my email, then click next to enter my password, Firefox does not fill in my password any longer.

It should fill in your password fine on the next page. Do you mean "username"?

Your username should be in form history.

Turns out it only does not fill the password in private mode, whereas other single step logins work in private mode as soon as you start typing the username.
