For a little while now I've noticed that on my Aurora build on OS X the update notification badge doesn't show up on the hamburger menu. The "Apply updates and restart" item is also not present inside the menu. I always have to go to FirefoxDeveloperEdition -> About Firefox and click the button to install the update.
On Nightly and release the badge shows up fine. I do have some addons installed in Aurora which I don't have on Nightly/Release (most notably TreeStyleTabs) which might be a factor.

I noticed that in about:config the value for app.update.badgeWaitTime was set by default to a large number. Changing it to "zero" (0) did the trick for me. [Note: For the badge to be shown app.update.badge has to be "true" (default) and, for Windows, Mozilla Maintenance Service has to be available installed.]
