Details

Reproducible on: Firefox 40.0.1 RC, Firefox 40 RC and Firefox 38.0.5 across all platforms

STR
Launch Firefox several times with clean profile.

ER
Firefox uses only a single design for Firstrun page.

AR
Starting Firefox for many times with clean profile are displayed 2 models for Firstrun page:
- with the “From our hands to yours” video in focus: http://i.imgur.com/GqBmMaZ.png
- with the “From our hands to yours” video presented in a section in the bottom of the page (the video is not in focus when the browser starts): http://i.imgur.com/UFD6jBf.png

Additional notes:
- This issue is reproducible on Firefox 40.0.1 RC build 2 (20150811223153), Firefox 40 RC build 5 (20150807085045) and Firefox 38.0.5 (20150525141253) under Windows 7 64-bit, Ubuntu 14.04 32-bit and Mac OS X 10.10.4.
Thanks for the report,

I believe this is intentional and part of an A/B test. CC'ing jpetto and cmore just for clarity.

:agibson is correct - the varying video placement is indeed part of an intentional A/B test. We have been running A/B (and sometimes /C & /D) tests on the firstrun pages for some time, and will likely continue to do so on future releases.

This is expected and part of the 38.0.5 acquisition campaign. The hypothesis was that the video may help conversion rates and retention of users. While it appears to have a neutral impact, we wanted to keep the experience the same for the Firefox 40.0 release of first run so that other variables wouldn't impact the results of the Firefox accounts goal. We'll be removing the video A/B test after we analyze the results in the coming week. Thanks for the bug.
