User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:40.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/40.0
Build ID: 20150807094952
Steps to reproduce:
Look at zoom indicator (-/100%/+)
Actual results:
It wastes a lot of space in the toolbar
Expected results:
1) it could definitely be made more compact (at least half the width) and keep its full functionaliy.
2) In practice many people don't use the the -/+ buttons at all (wheel mouses) and these should be made optional

Sure. But which problem do you want to solve here? "wastes space" is not a problem per-se if you don't explain which objective problem that currently creates, to make sure that "it's too wide" is not only a personal preference.

The problem is keeping sufficient width of the text fields (URL, searchbox). This field is wide, and doesn't shrink when the window becomes narrow. The first thing that goes is the URL field...
In fact most toolbar buttons have too much lateral space IMHO (or this space should be shrinkable). But the zoom indicator is the worst offender, especially considering that 66% of its width (-/+ buttons) is of no use to many people.
See attachment for a comparison between current and a possible compact version.

The zoom indicator is now 125px wide, seems ok.
