Steps to reproduce:

Composed mail with attachment. Wait.
Repeat with different addressee and attachment.


Actual results:

Thunderbird went gray. Displayed (not responding).


Expected results:

Allowed completion and delivery of mail.

Thunderbird did not create a crash report. The attached file is from Debugging Tools for Windows.
The last crash report that Thunderbird created was in February 2015.

Unfortunately the stacktrace indicates memory corruption. That leaves a lot of open territory. 
Suggest you first download and reinstall from https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/
Then start THunderbird in safe mode https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/safe-mode

OS: Unspecified → Windows 8.1
Looking through Thunderbird's files (....\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird), there are a lot of calendar files.
So I removed Lightning.
At the moment on a different computer and will see if it's happy before reinstalling from the file downloaded from Mozilla.org.

Seems to occur when Thunderbird automatically saves a draft with attachments.
Could not reproduce on the laptop.
Diagnosed memory on the desktop (original) computer, all OK.
Removed and replaced RAM to burnish edge connectors, no change.
Reinstalled Thunderbird 38.2 over original install, no change.
Removed Thunderbird, restarted computer, installed Thunderbird, no change.
There are no extensions in Thunderbird and all plugins are disabled.
IMAP and POP accounts behave the same.
Moved drafts folder to local folders, no change.
In case there are files shared with Firefox, upgraded Firefox from 39.x to 40.0.2. No difference.
