On b2g v2.2, before start youtube video playback, "HQ" button exists over the video area. But on master the button does not exist. STR [1] Start youtube app [2] choose video Expected HQ button exists over the video area Result HQ button does not exist. And video started automatically.
[Blocking Requested - why for this release]:

[Triage] We should separate the discussion. For HQ, it should depend on which devices. Flame support 480p only, so HQ doesn't matter here. For Aries, we should have the HQ button support. However, we won't be blocked by this if there's no HQ button. Put QAWANTED to check if it happens on Aries as well. Let's use this bug to follow up the HQ button issue. For video started automatically, we should be blocked by this. I prefer to separate the bug, so I'll file another bug and tag it as blocked.

This issue DOES occur on both Flame and Aries 2.5 builds. There is no HQ option when viewing a YouTube video. This issue seems similar to the behavior found in bug 1179633, which mentions that this may be due to HD videos needing MSE support. Interestingly, if I switch YouTube.com over to the desktop site (rather than the mobile site), I am able to select between multiple SD and HD resolutions (180p, 720p, 480p, 360p, etc.), which does properly serve the HD video content. Attaching comparison screenshot to highlight the issue.
Not asking for a regression window here as this is not a blocker per comment 2 by Al. A window is requested on bug 1196643 for the automatic start issue.

There is no HQ button because MSE compensates automatically for network bandwidth. This is consistent with the Android player which also supports DASH. It is not necessary to select a playback rate on desktop but YouTube has chosen made a UX choice to do so.
