What is this purchase for:  The role will focus on Search strategy, not the execution of the strategy. Namely, the creation of a Firefox Search strategy.

Why is this purchase needed: Torgeir Hovden has a unique set of experience and expertise in both the technology and business of web search, and has proven to be an invaluable advisor on his previous broader engagement with Mozilla R&D. Firefox is increasingly needing to create experiences that are differentiated in the area of core search, and having input from Torgeir will accelerate our understanding of the search challenges and opportunities.

What is the risk if this is not purchased: We’ll be a lot slower getting a reasonable search strategy created, and would likely have to start a recruitment effort to find a similar subject matter expert.

What is the alternative: Do it ourselves without the expertise in-house; look for a Torgeir clone.

Scope/SOW:  The project will run over approximately 2 months /10 weeks at 20h/week to deliver an overall Search strategy document. The document shall  contain actionable recommendations for how to establish Mozilla and Firefox as a player in Search - including suggested business model(s) and high-level plan.  

Cost: 200h @ US$300 = US$60k. The hourly fee will cover all personal costs. Mozilla will in addition pay for any travel-, accommodation- or other business related cost. Travel and accommodation will be according to the Mozilla policy for their leadership.
