In order to get the Gaia version, Marketplace needs the same kind of information as what's in device.os (or in VersionHelper).

Rather than duplicate that data, we assume getting access to that through an existing methodology would be easier.

Why can't you use the UA string for this?
We can serve 2.5 with hasFeature(), and we can deal with a more nuanced solution when we have a more nuanced problem, after 2.5.
