In the process of investigating Bug 1169842, I found that the camera button does not respond once the screen is off.
Here's a video for the bug: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=egZ1DLS2LHQ

The STR is quite similar to bug 1169842 so taking this to 2.5+ too.
Please document the STR in written and also provide the build info.

Description:
If the user holds down the camera button at while the screen is off, the camera app does not appear.
Note:
Having screen lock enabled of not does not seem to matter.
Repro Steps:
1) Update a Xperia Z3 Compact (B2G) to 20150806112625
2) Lock the device
3) Hold down the camera button for several seconds
Actual:
The screen remains off and camera app does not start
Expected:
The screen should be turned on and camera app should start

Changing component as this can be reproduced with and without lock screen.
UX needs to clarify the behavior of the camera button here. Does the user need to press power button to first turn the screen on *and then* press the camera button to launch the camera? Where are the Spark feature specs?

I don't think we should fix this. Pressing the button by accident if you have the phone in your bag would just drain the battery.

Discussed during UX triage:
Let's copy the behaviour from the lockscreen - long press hardware camera button, wake up device and launch camera.
Thanks for pinging the UX team!

Same with the power button :)
I like the long-press option Tif suggests.

I agree with Gregor actually: lock screen would turn the screen off in 10 sec if the user did not proceed to unlock, while the launched Camera can keep the screen on for 1 min or more.
The real question unanswered is, where are the written specs? We are literally doing things other way around and decide things on the fly -- it will affect our testing plans and code design and quality etc.

I am actually the media person in charge of the camera feature. I do not have a spec for the camera hardware button.

Is this a thing that is actually happening, even with power button (short press)? I guess my phone is always in my pocket, not my bag...
Why does long-press not mitigate this? I guess if the phone is in bag with button permanently held down, phone would turn off in the case of power button, and I do not know what would happen if camera button is pressed but never released.

If the feature we are talking about is *long press camera button to turn on screen and camera app* instead of *short press*, I agree with you the problem shouldn't happen.
(One more reason we need a defined spec ....)

Ah, :tif was already talking about long press since comment 5. Sorry about not realizing that.

Long press on camera button is a feature of Android (at least on Sony's firmware) so it would be nice to have. It's also secure, you can't then start browsing photos or access the rest of the device if you use lock screen security.
