Have seen this for quite a while
Mac OS 9.1
Mac 2002-01-15-03 Trunk

Steps to repro:
I had my mac set to go to sleep after 30 minutes. When I come back the screen is 
usually black (I guess the monitor sleep mode blanks this)
Whenm I hit the keyboard or move the mouse, the screen comes back, but I am 
always in "talkback crash mode" when I come back. So I have to assume that the 
Mac crashes while in sleep mode.

sleep-oriented bug recently, bug 120451...
