Details
The Linux installer deletes the whole /usr/local/mozilla directory (or whatever). It should delete everything except files in /usr/local/mozilla/plugins which weren't instlled by mozilla (the only mozilla installes plugin is currently libnullplugin.so). It's tiresome adding all the plugins (e.g. Java) each time a new Mozilla is installed.

Please check for duplicates before filing bugs, especially if you feel it's "tiresome" since most likely lots of other people do too. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 69153 ***

I've tried, but I would have never imagined that the needed keywords were 'surgical' and 'strategy'.

Or "install delete". Quicksearch simplifies the process greatly: http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/quicksearch.html (the type-in box on the bugzilla home page accepts searches in this format once you learn it).
