Steps to reproduce:

You don't have to do anything except have an older version of Firefox installed.


Actual results:

The updater fails to update, and it never stops bothering me about updating it either.  It bothers me at least 12 times a day...maybe more.


Expected results:

The updgrade install should have succeeded... the only way to make it work is to do a manual removal of firefox, then to open up Chrome (or ie perhaps) and download the firefox update, and install it from there.

But the update failed... and what should have happened here would be that the updater itself should not bother me more than once a day.  To be honest, even that is more than I want to be reminded.  It's REALLY annoying being spammed.  I've honesty started to cultivate a simmering hatred of firefox because of this issue.

I'm assigning this a slightly higher priority than it might have, because of the fact that the updater fails so badly that it can't even update firefox successfully without the assistance of a second web browser.

Try this workaround.
1) Create a new profile: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profile-manager-create-and-remove-firefox-profiles
2) Then update Firefox through this new profile
3) Start your current profile toc check if the update has been applied

In addition, you can open the folder C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Mozilla\updates\ and delete its content (restart FF after that).

hsj3, can you please copy and paste your browser's about:support information into this bug? This information, particularly the "Important Modified Preferences" section, may reveal why Firefox displays the reminder too often.

I'm not getting that option from Firefox.  There is no help menu.

I'm seeing an "Open Menu" and if I click it there is an item for "Open Help Menu".  But if I click that I'm only getting these options:

    Basic browsing
    Install and update
    Sync your browsers
    Chat and share
    Do more with apps
    Protect your privacy
    Manage preferences and add-ons
    Fix slowness, crashing, error messages and other problems
    Get community support

There is no help menu.  If I click customize to find a help menu to add, there isn't an option for it, either.  What should I do?

It's been some time since I filed this, and I don't remember if I reenabled updates, nor do I know where to check the setting.

I'm not sure yet.  I just reenabled updates for firefox after months of blissful silence from its updater.  I won't know whether it's working right until it gets a chance to update or not.  It is using a newer version of FF now, fyi (because the manual uninstall/reinstall did seem to get the old one off, and the new one working).

Sorry, cancel that first part -- I did find the place to reenable updates, and I did set it.  The second paragraph is true though... I'm waiting on results now that I reenabled auto updates on your behalf.

The updater gives a message each time Firefox is launched, now, as opposed to continually, throughout the day.  That's more tolerable than before... it would be best if the options available in settings were presented to the user at the time the upgrade reminder is presented, however... and it would be nice to have an option to click, to install it the next time the computer reboots, or as it shuts down.

I did change the setting back to "never check for updates" and I noticed that it still does check for them.  That setting being ignored is a separate new bug, actually.

The browser still faces the same original problem, which prevents me from testing your new code.  The new installations do not ever succeed.  The old browser is stuck on the system.  The new one does not install.  I took a screen shot of that error message, but I'm not sure how to add an attachment to the thread.  The updater still bombs with extra messages, in the meantime.  I usually keep it turned off.

And btw, no, there are NOT any other instances of firefox running.  The installer simply fails to install, somehow... maybe it isn't killing the previous installation... I don't know... but each time I try to run it, the earlier one fails to get removed, and the new ones fails to get installed.

Select Browser under the Environment menu item.
Copy and paste the following into the bottom of the Scratchpad window.

You should be able to find them under your user directory under the AppData\Local\Mozilla\updates\ directory. If you have had multiple installs you will have multiple directories and you need to find the one associated with the installation directory by checking the paths in specified in the files.
