this must be the week for users reporting bad message delete performance.
How many messages in junk and trash folders?
And what Antivirus software do you run?
If those folders are empty, start *Windows'* safe mode with networking enabled
- win10 http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/change-startup-settings-in-windows-10
Still In Windows safe mode, start thunderbird in safe mode
- http://support.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/kb/safe-mode
Does problem go away?

It can happen with junk and trash folders empty. Issue only started after Windows 10 upgrade - never happened under Win 7. I run windows defender as well as MalwareBytes Pro.
I will try safe mode start up to see if things improve.

Tried safe mode - no issues. Rebooted and tried normal - no issues - hard to say - the problem is intermitent
Yes it does. Seems to be happening if you try to open a message that just came in. If you wait a minute or so, then everything works normally. I had 20 messages overnight and Thunderbird was open - no issues opening any of them.

can you get a profile please using the steps at https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Mozilla/Performance/Reporting_a_Thunderbird_Performance_Problem_with_G ?
For step 1, try using version 38 instald of the daily build. And if it doesn't work with 38, please try the beta at http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/channel/

Wayne, I have not experienced the issues now for several days - it seems since 11/11 Win 10 cumulative updates. I will wait and see if Thunderbird continues to function normally. BTW, for a while I downloaded and used 64 bit version of fossamail - it functioned normally even when Thunderbird was still freezing up - I kept going back and forth as an experiment. My main dislike of Fossamail was its inability to "remember" which senders were safe and forcing me to press the "show content" button on most e-mails, while Thunderbird remembers safe senders.
