Details

a while back, before the 4.x pref migration code was written, I had hacked in
some temporary code to mozilla/modules/libpref/src/nsPref.cpp so that if a
prefs.js file wasn't found, some default mailnews prefs would be created.

as soon as the tree opens, I am going to remove that code.

now, if you start up 5.0 without a prefs.js file, and start up messenger, it
will have nothing. (before, because of my hack, it would have a news server,
news.mozilla.org, and a mail server on nsmail-2.)

If I'm cc'ing you, its so you'll know what happened.

Seth - so which engineer would have the part about creating the prefs.js file?
no one will have to create the prefs.js file.

there are default prefs, and once 4.x pref migration, account manager, and
mail-news pref panes all work, there is no need for my hack.

fix check in.

to verify, move your prefs.js file to the side.

start up 5.0 and bring up messenger, you should not see an mail or news server.

the way to get mail and news is to either migrate your 4.5 prefs, or use the
account manager.
