I have a Hotmail account configured in Thunderbird via IMAP, and I repeatedly get notification dialogs with the following error:

  The current operation on <folder> did not succeed.
  The mail server for account <account> responded:
  Status Command is not permitted in current state (NotAuthenticatedServerError)

In spite of the error messages, Thunderbird appears to receive mail fine.

Please let me know if there's any other information I can provide to help diagnose the problem.

It looks error happens on Select command in many cases.
It looks temporary error in server which frequently happens, as you say Tb can receive mail.
This is server side error, so Tb side can do nothing.
Some search result document says "Login to server via Web mail, then problem disappered".
Internal setup by "Doing login to server via Web mail" may be needed for such server.
