Steps to reproduce:

Hello

Sorry I have not found anything about it :-(
sorry for the translation

When you save a draft, Thunderbird 38.2.0 closed, there is an error message and the draft is not registered. Must be recorded manually.

1. click on a mailto link (http://j2m-06.pagesperso-orange.fr/index.html)
2. type text
3. close the message (or wait for the automatic recording scrap)

NB: If you manually record the draft is ok

Bonjour

Actual results:

The draft does not register

Eckard, can you assist?

same with TB41

Idem avec TB41
I try to explain the issue with other words, even if J2m06 did it well ;-)

1) open a "mailto" link, on this webpage for instance : http://www.reflexologie-anti-stress.com/annuaire.htm
2) a new window of thunderbird appears : write some words
3) close the window (or wait for the automatic saving of the draft)
4) an error message appears and the message is not saved into the drafts

Please note that it works fine if you save manually the draft by clicking on the button.
Please note that Tunderbird must be closed before clicking on a "mailto" link!

Assist in which way?
In reproducing the bug?
Confirming this bug in IMAP account on a Mac running OS X 10.10.5.
Draft auto-saving fails and generates the following error message:
"Confirm:
There was an error saving the message to Drafts.
Retry?"

If you have confirmed that bug, please change the status of it in order to make progress.
This bug is confirmed, so can you change the status so it could be fixed later. Or tell me what to do to change the status.
Thanks.

Changed bug status to "NEW".

Is this a regression?
i.e. did it work OK in version 31 (earlier this year) or 24 (earlier last year)?

I tested versions 24.8.1 and 31.0 in new profiles and got the same error message (see attachment) on automatic saving a new compose window generated via a mailto link.
Clicking "OK" saves the message in the Drafts folder.

But the problem seems to be more complicated:
when I launch Thunderbird and compose a new message in the IMAP account, I get the same error message after 5 min (or when trying to save the draft manually), but this time even clicking repeatedly "OK" won’t save the message and the Drafts folder stays empty.
Now, when I open another folder (e.g. Inbox) and then return to the Drafts folder, it contains several identical items of the draft (e.g. five identical drafts if before I had clicked five times on the OK button).

However, if in Tools > Account Settings > Copies & Folders > Drafts I choose "Drafts" Folder on: "Local Folders" (instead of the IMAP Drafts folder) I don’t get any error messages upon automatic or manual saving of a draft.

Don't forget that the bug occurs 'also' when you tried to close the window and save a draft of a new email generated via a mailto link (after writing some words).

When I close a new compose window generated via mailto, I get the warning "Enregistrer le message" message asking me whether I want to save or not save the message.
Clicking on "Enregistrer" (Save) generates the error message. If I click "OK" the message will nevertheless be saved in the Drafts folder.

If I close a new compose window generated via mailto, I have the warning message. If I click on "Save", I get the error message. If I try to save it again by clicking on "OK", I have another problem : if I want to close the window of the email, I get a new message : "Thunderbird is saving an email. Do you want to quit or wait for the end of the email saving"
If i click on "Wait", the message disappears but the draft is not saved. (unless I open Thunderbird).

If I click on "Wait", the message does not disappear (i.e. the compose window is still displayed).
If I now open the Thunderbird main window (via menu "Window"), the compose window disappears and is saved as a new draft in the Drafts folder.

With "unless I open Thunderbird" I guess you mean "unless I display the main window".
Thunderbird gets launched as soon as you click on the mailto link, even if only a compose window is visible.
You should see in the taskbar that TB is "active", just as I see the "active" TB icon in the Dock of my Mac.

Anyhow, we are only two users - with the same ISP (Free) - reporting this problem for two different platforms. We need more tests from other users.

Yes I have exactly the same problem you describe.
But we are three users who have experienced the issue. Do not forget J2m06.
Where can we find other users in bugzilla?
this problem still exists,I confirm this bug J2m06, currently on Thunderbird 38.4.0

Problem, Thunderbird open or closed. I just checked.

(bug not disturbing for me, but yes for other people!
That is why I am not come sooner)
In the meantime my IMAP address has been migrated to the Zimbra platform of my ISP Free (France).
Since the migration I no longer encounter the above problem, neither in Thunderbird 38.5.1 nor in Earlybird 43.

Hello Eckard,
I have also the ISP named Free. Could you explain how did you migrate your IMAP address?
In french if possible :) thanks

Go to this web page http://www.free.fr/assistance/2424.html and follow the instructions.
The migration of my address to Zimbra took about two or three months!

Allez à cette page de l'assistance de Free http://www.free.fr/assistance/2424.html et suivez les instructions.
La migration de mon adresse vers Zimbra a pris entre deux et trois mois !

I have also migrated to the Zimbra platform since a while and I still have the bug.
Hi,
Thunderbird 45.1.0 has just been released and this bug is still not fixed...
Summary: Error automatic recording (or closing) of the draft (mailto link) if Thunderbird is closed → Error automatic recording (or closing) of the draft (mailto link) if Thunderbird is closed. "There was an error saving the message to Drafts."
Whiteboard: [dupme]

Hello,
4 years later I come back here... because the automatic saving of e-mails being written with Thunderbird closed still doesn't work.
Is someone can reproduce it and work on that a bit ?
I thank you very much 😋

Flags: needinfo?(vseerror)

I am not able to reproduce this using current beta 76. However, I sometimes see random fails, just running normally.

So there are random fails, like you say. So this is still buggy?

Yes, random. I don't have a reproducible method. So not really helpful in moving the bug forward
