User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:38.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/38.0 SeaMonkey/2.35
Build ID: 20150825182814
Steps to reproduce:
try to open attachment file from IMAP account in Mail/News client (Seamonkey 2.35, 64-bit build, Centos6 and LMDE2 workstations/notebooks)
Actual results:
download of attachment starts and immediately fails with "The download cannot be saved because an unknown error occurred. Please try again."
Please note that:
(1) saving of files works invariably even for those which fail to open in a program;
(2) file type seems to be irrelevant (reproducible with doc, odt, pdf files);
(3) not always reproducible, without a coherent pattern regarding senders, transit mail servers, etc. In one message with 4 attached files, 2 were OK, 2 failed to open;
(4) problem is manifested on several different workstations/user accounts in a department, also on notebooks at remote locations;
(5) reverting to Seamonkey 2.33.1 eliminates the issue
Expected results:
File should be opened in respective program

NOT reproducible with German SeaMonkey 2.38b1 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:41.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/41.0 Build 20150904215228 (Classic Theme) on German WIN7 64bit
Summary: open attachment file issue in Seamonkey 2.35 → Open attachment from IMAP account fails with error message

Well - further "research":
- SeaMonkey 2.38 64 bit build, on CentOS 6.7 x86_64 behaves like 2.35
- SeaMonkey 2.38 32 bit build, on CentOS 6.7 x86_64 has no problems with the same attachments
-> the problem is associated with x86_64 build of Seamonkey >= 2.35
I understand that x86_64 build is unofficial and contributed, so the bug may be closed...

Does this also happen if you start SeaMonkey in safe mode?

NOT reproducible with en-US SeaMonkey 2.40a2 Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; x64; rv:43.0 from akalla download area) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/ 43.0 Build 20151010043152, (Classic Theme) on German WIN7 64bit: I can open an attached.jpg with double click without any problem.
Fixed for 2.40? Linux only?
@reporter: Anything interesting in menu 'Tools → Web development → error console' in the moment when you try to open the attachment?

two screenshots from the error console in 2.33.1 and 2.38 (x86_64, Linux) are attached (sorry, didn't figure out how to copy all messages at once in a more meaningful format).
BTW, the problem is never manifested for image (jpg, png) files which are visualized directly in the mail window.

Seamonkey 2.39 - same issue; not reproducible on Win 7 32bit version, intermittently occurring with office/pdf files on Linux 64bit version (though files are downloaded to the tempdir)...
