the 2.4ghz spectrum in our offices is causing a lot of wireless network issues for our users. we do not have auto power and auto channel enabled (Juniper recommended) so we need to look into manual band steering to make our users prefer the 5ghz spectrum.
1) lower 2.4ghz radios as they propagate well
2) disable 2.4ghz around conferences as most devices in these conference rooms are capable of 5ghz.
3) adjust 5ghz spectrum
4) rerun NetSpot spectrum analyzer (until we can procure a better tool) and gather rf data from the controllers/APs
long term, we'll still need to move users off the 2.4ghz spectrum. WiFi is not only collision avoidance, it's also half duplex. so every time there is a retransmit, it causes all other users on that radio to stop talking. here is an example cross channel interference we see from *one* of our APs on the 2.4ghz spectrum:

i phrased that wrong and let me hopefully correct it.
WiFi uses CTS/RTS frames with a NAV timer that allows it to have to "undisrupted" talk with the AP (collision avoidance). When we have retransmits, these frames can get jumbled and/or lost due to the cross channel or adjacent channel interference. This causes lost air time as the client has to resend all the packets to the AP and those need to be ACK'd.
real life example:
daughter - daddy daddy daddy daddy daddy daddy (request to send)
father - what? (clear to send)
father - you have 1 minute to get your point of across (NAV timer)
daughter - blah blah blah (packets)
father - *wasn't paying attention 15 seconds through due to phone ringing* (cross/adjacent channel interference)
daughter - "daddy, now i have to start all over" (retransmit)

worked with EUS to test this option and it has shown to allow the clients to prioritize the 5ghz spectrum over the 2.4.
also changed this option on alan chang's laptop and he has consistently connected to this spectrum whereas before he was only connecting to the 2.4.
