don't show LDAP directories from the sidebar and the "select addresses" dialog, or add quick search text field either we need to add a quick search text field, or we need to hide LDAP directories in these two places. the reason is that without a quick search text field, LDAP directories are useless (as nothing will show up.) note, in 4.x, the "select addresses" dialog had a quicksearch text field. assign to jglick, for her to decide what to do for these two scenarios. jennifer, when you've decided what you want, assign back to me.

I think including the quick search text field is valuable if that is doable. Once the Select Addresses dialog is changed, bug 89495, it should have a search field. http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/showattachment.cgi?attach_id=54967 See attachment below for Sidebar AB tab. Folks agree?

Looks good to me!
Responding to Jen's Comment #2: Similar to what's planned for the Select Addresses dialog, I think we should add text labels to the sidebar tab as follows: Look in: [drop down list of address books] for: [Qsearch field]
space is an issue for sidebar, but i'll post some screenshots to give folks an idea of what robin's idea might look like.
OK, this is with the "Lock in:" and "for:" labels added. I squashed things in, but in reality, the AB name most likely be cut off ("Collected Address..."), unless the user had the sidebar larger. I think I am leaning towards leaving the labels off for the AB sidebar tab, because of space issues. The full AB and Select Addresses dialogs would still have the labels.
I vote for the keeping the labels, if there's room. However, if there's not enough room for labels, we could use tooltips instead. For example, when user mouses over the drop-down list of address books, a tooltip would be: "Choose the address book you want to search". If the user mouses over the Qsearch field, the tooltip would be: "Enter the name you want to find".

updating summary, as it looks like we are going to add the text field. jglick, once the decision is official, and the spec is update, can you provide a link to it?

Seth mentioned in another bug, that Select Addresses dialog and Sidebar AB panel will need a way to stop a directory search in progress. Because a Stop button will use up space, and because space is so tight for sidebar tabs, and because my assumption is that more intermediate/advanced users will be using this feature (Sidebar version), I'd like to go with Robin's Tooltip suggestion, but no text labels for the Sidebar version only. If we get negative feedback, we can revisit. The Address Book window and the Select Addresses dialog will both have descriptive labels as appropriate. This sound ok? Spec linked in url field above will be updated shortly. Search field should work in the Select Addresses dialog and AB Sidebar tab the same way it does in the Main Mail window. Select Addresses Dialog: Add a "Stop" button to screenshot in bug 89495. http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/showattachment.cgi?attach_id=54967 AB Sidebar Tab: No "Stop" button to the right of search field when a Local AB is selected. Results are so quick, the button would always be disabled. Add a Stop button to the right of the search field if an LDAP dir is selected. Stop button only enabled when a search is in progress. Seth, if this isn't doable, we could just have the Stop button always to the right of the search field.
