Steps to reproduce:

I noticed duplicate Firefox profiles in ~/Library/Application Support/Firefox/Profiles


Actual results:

I had some bugs with a few apps, which were solved, but I they pointed out I have two profiles. No idea why

as you said they are duplicate, means their names are same.
Can you tell what is the name of the profiles ? and can't you delete one of them opening profile manager ?

Both Firefox profile folders had very long strings with characters plus one with the addition NEW PROFILE and the other DEFAULT. In the meantime I figured out that the NEW PROFILE had primarily content that predated DEFAULT. Somebody advised me just to delete NEW PROFILE (though the name NEW doesn't make sense), and now the bugs in 2 other apps were solved.

Strange, though. I didn't make any changes to Firefox or anything else on my MacBookPro.
Using MacOS 10.11 and Firefox 41.0.1.
