Installed latest build of Mozilla. After install the The new browser came up normaly. I then the browser crashed so I reloaded it from my desktop icon. (new versions do not get placed in the strat memu). The display was totaly out of wack. The HTML window was normal everything else Was unreadable. Screen shot at http://computersystemconsulting.ca/cgi-bin/CSC/csc_bug_tracker.cgi/download/43e1ba7e96b75f3b37956c772f888e4f0df8a5e6/snapshot1.png This effects both Mozilla and Netscape 6.
Added info. If I lanch Mozilla as root it displays properly dito for Netscape 6. This means that some information in the user home directory was corrupted by the Mozilla install. There is not netescape or mozilla directory in my root home.
This might not be the same problem, but maybe it is related. I've got various problems after I installed Netscape 6.21 beside my Mozilla 0.9.7. First of all Mozilla sometimes forgets to load CSS and some pictures. This continues on a specific page, until I do a shift-reload. Worse I have problem reading some webpages at all. I think this is only when trying to load the default file in a directory, like "http://www.someserver.com/" or "http://www.someserver.com/somedir/" (with or without trailing slash). I found a work-around: "http://www.someserver.com//" (yes, two slashes in the end) seems to work when the normal ways doesn't, but is very frustrating having to manually edit the adress when a link doesn't work. In the minor bugs department, Mozilla starts on www.mozilla.org/start each time I have used Netscape since the last Mozilla-session (And also Netscape starts on it "first time run" page each time I have run Mozilla). Shouldn't it be possible to have a version of Mozilla and Netscape 6 installed on the same system ? (Win98) I have installed in two different directories.
Are you using the same profile for both? Since profile data formats change, that can lead to profile corruption....
I might be using the same profile. I'm using the default in both ! I first installed Mozilla 0.9.7, then later Netscape 6.2.1 because I ran into some Mozilla-bugs making it a bad Mozilla-build for daily use. But still switced between the two from time to time. Tried uninstalling Mozilla and installing it again to see if it helped (it didn't). Not once in these steps I was warned or asked about what to do with my profiles. Neither in Mozilla nor Netscape... I guess you should be asked whether you wan't to copy an existing profile or create a new (or, WHEN possible, share the profiles). Not just share profiles pr. default, especially not when if is doomed to give you problems. I have now for the first time been looking at the Profile Manager, and I seem to miss a "copy profile" (or "create new profile based on existing") button ! I would prefer to keep my current bookmarks in both profiles. Also if I create a new profile, I get asked which one I wan't to use when starting the browser. I don't see any "make default profile" checkbox ? I think profile management could need some work ?
Try going to Edit > Preferences > Debug and UNCHECK 'debug XUL boxes' Note: that option is only available in Mozilla. And it may be a bit difficult in your current state :)
Alternately, just put: user_pref("xul.debug.box", false) in the prefs.js in the profile in question (find the place in that prefs.js where the pref is set to true, and change that).
I found the answer to the problem. The install of Mozilla deleted my user profile in the user directory. Only the one in the root home existed. This I could not directly copy but did manage to get my bookmarks and To a new profile in the user directory which I created with. modzilla -manageprofiles as the user in question. This are now back on line with only a morning wasted. This I would still consider a bug in the install. Thanks for the help Shanta McBain
