Component: Untriaged → Audio/Video: Playback
Product: Firefox → Core
Small note: You also get the same result when using the mute button next to the tab.

Sounds like the mute state isn't being propageted by the output layer.
Component: Audio/Video: Playback → Audio/Video: MSG/cubeb/GMP
Priority: -- → P2
This seems to have been fixed somewhere around Firefox 43. Can someone else check if it is fixed on their end too? If yes, this can be closed.
I'm gonna mark this as resolved. If someone else has still has the problem he or she can open a new ticket.
