1220224 - [Contacts] Constantly tries to merge two contacts with similar names

Description

I have two Contacts, I'll call them "Person A I" and "Person A II"

Originally I had them both in my contacts as "Person A" but when I realized that Contacts was always trying to merge them, I changed their names to "Person A I" and "Person A II". Contacts is _still_ trying to merge them constantly. I feel like this change made the names different enough that it should no longer try to merge them.

Could you please give more information about this problem?
It would be helpful to know: 
-Which device and which version are you using
-Which other fields have those contacts, phone number, email....are they the same or different?

They both have phone numbers but the phone numbers are different. One of them has an email address. They don't have any other info

I am trying to reproduce this issue, may I ask you a few more questions?

-Did you imported those two contacts from a SIM card?
-In contacts details, do you see in Name field: Person or Person A?

I got to reproduce what you are seeing if I follow these steps:
-Created two contacts Person A with different mobile phone numbers in a SIM card with another device
-Imported those two contacts into Aries's contacts app
-If from one Person A go to try to find duplicates, then it shows me the other contact Person A.

Going to Person A's contact details, the Name shows Person, and the Surname A, if I change only the surname to A I, then it will be still suggested as a duplicate contact to merge. But if you change the name, Person I A, then it will not be suggested anymore.
Could you please try that to see if that would work?

If I am not wrong that is how the merge was implemented, looking at the name field.

But, adding qawanted to double to check if the merge is that way or if this issue could be reproduced on their side.

I imported the contacts from Google

I tried changing Person A I to Person I A I and it still tried to merge. I changed that person to something completely different and there was no longer an attempted merge. I changed it back to Person A I and it now tries to merge again.

Hi Tim, 

I have tried many times, following different steps but cannot reproduce this problem. 
Could I kindly ask you to provide some logs so we can investigate further?

Please go to the device Settings -> Developer -> Debugging via USB, select ADB and DevTools. Then scroll down and active RIL Output in ADB. 

Connect your device and once it is detected do: adb logcat | grep "Error" -> log.txt and reproduce the problem. Then attach the log.txt file here.

I reproduce the same way as comment 3.

What I did:
1) In desktop gmail, create a contact named 'Person A' with a phone number and an email.
2) In desktop gmail, create another contact named 'Person A' with different phone number, no email.
3) On Aries, import gmail contacts (I imported all since I have only 4 gmail contacts)

- Note that all four were imported without issue. During the process Contacts did NOT tell me the two Person A's are dupes.

4) Go into any of the Person A's contact details page, and tap on 'Find duplicate contacts'

- See that the other Person A's name comes up as a suggested duplicate.

5) Change the two Person A's name into Person A I and Person A II (surname 'A I' and surname 'A II').
6) Go into Person A I's details page, and tap on 'Find duplicate contacts'

- Note that Person A II comes up as a suggested duplicate. But if I go to Person A II and try to find a duplicate, no results would come up.

Also,

This is NOT reproducible to me.
