Hi,
I'm in the process of upgrading the Tableau stage server to Tableau 9.1 and it requires a minimum of 8 cores.
Tableau is giving warning that the server only has 6 cores.
Could you increase the number of cores to 8 so I can progress with the upgrade?
Thanks,
Josephine

Hello,
Upon booting into the bios to investigate, it was confirmed that this server has dual sockets, but only one processor.
This is a Xeon E5-2620, the "6" in the name indicates 6 cores. Even though this shows as 12 cores in Windows because of hyperthreading, the Tableau hardware requirements page (http://www.tableau.com/products/techspecs) says,
"8 physical cores, 2.0 GHz or higher CPU"
Note, "8 physical cores" as a requirement. That could be over 2 processors. So I would suggest getting another processor to add to this server.
Will loop in DCops if that route is desired.

Thanks Ryan for your help on this.
Yes, I'd like to add the additional core to 8 physical cores on this server. Please let me know what needs to be done on my side to make it happen.
Thanks,
Josephine

Josephine,
We'd be adding an additional processor with 6 cores, which would make a total of 12 cores, 24 logical.
Tossing to DCops to roll with.

Van,
Make sure processor quoted is identical to the one already in the server.

Hi Ryan/Van,
I'm not close enough with the technical spec of the core but I trust both of you had looked at it. So here's my confirmation.

the heat sink that came with the CPU doesn't fit the host. I've emailed our vendor to send us the correct kit ASAP.

The vendor contacted me yesterday and is still trying to source the heatsink as models made before November use an older latch on heatsink. Will let you know ASAP.

Still struggling with this and waiting to hear from HP
All the Gen8 servers that were shipped before November, 2013 will have Latch type heat sink. The server that were shipped after November, 2013 will go with Screw Down heat sink.
There is no way to determine when ordering the CPU kit which one will come with the CPU.
do you guys want to look into purchasing a new server if we can't procure this heat sink?

Van - good question. Answer is "no" - I don't want to replace. We'd forgo the upgrade for now. Let me know what HP comes back with or if we can part something out from PHX. I heard eBay is awesome, too. ;) Kidding.

the vendor found a heat sink that might work, i need to take this host down momentarily to confirm. i'd like to do this after lunch, ~130pm PT 1/4/16. will ping MOC for downtime.

this has been a lot of fun - it looks like we were shipped the gen 9 cpu instead of the gen 8. although they are supposedly the same CPU, this minor difference is not allowing the host to boot up. ive reached back out to our VAR to see what's our next step.

we're good now - i was able to find a similar CPU in our stack of spares that came in from phx1 and have installed it.

Almost,
This may need to be reinstalled. Booting Linux to see if this sees both processors in OS.

Had to deal with an piece of windows arcanery. I did three things first, I in place "upgraded" to datacenter edition and rebooted. Second, I ran bcddeit and enabled a forced HAL redetection.
Third, I ran msconfig and unchecked the "number of processers" in the advanced boot options and rebooted.
