Could you try disabling your addons one-by-one, restart Firefox after each one and try to load the URL again? Does it start working? If yes, what addon was interfering with it? If this doesn't solve the issue, could you try restarting Firefox in safe mode and load the URL again? Do you see an update displayed? Instructions to start Firefox in safe mode are here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode

Disabling all Add-Ons did not help. Using the safe mode did the trick! Would you be willing to send us the contents of your about:support page? There's a button at the top to copy the raw data. Have you updated to Firefox 42? If so, does the XML load properly in Firefox 42?

(In reply to quadronom from comment #10) > Yes, I updated to 42. But no, the xml does not load properly either. > Similiar result, now it directly shows me the content of the xml. Could you explain what you mean by the "content of the xml"? Could you post what you see when you load this xml file? https://aus4.mozilla.org/update/3/Firefox/41.0.2/20151014143721/WINNT_x86-msvc/de/release/Windows_NT%2010.0.0.0%20(x64)/default/default/update.xml?force=1 Also, could you go back to about:support and click the "copy text to clipboard" button instead of raw data? I accidentally asked for the raw data yesterday, which is less human-readable. Thanks!

We may be getting closer, but you should actually be seeing the following: <updates> <update type="minor" displayVersion="42.0" appVersion="42.0" platformVersion="42.0" buildID="20151029151421" detailsURL="https://www.mozilla.org/de/firefox/42.0/releasenotes/" actions="showURL" openURL="https://www.mozilla.org/de/firefox/42.0/whatsnew/?oldversion=%OLD_VERSION%"> <patch type="complete" URL="http://download.mozilla.org/?product=firefox-42.0-complete&os=win&lang=de&force=1" hashFunction="sha512" hashValue="6f970ad1e87b149e833bf449e82cadcd55a2332a9ab4b41dfaa4f2992579205addd9f753099d30c43e103e5ed09cd4211c8788096a40de3fa5745f49d0a884e9" size="50911023"/> </update> </updates> Later today I'll install Youtube Unblocker myself and see if I can reproduce. I've been able to reproduce this locally as soon as I installed Youtube Unblocker. Deactivating or uninstalling the addon fixes the issue. I've gone ahead and submitted a report to Youtube Unblocker with a link to this bug.

I'm going to reopen this since there may be more going on here. Could you do the following and tell me what you see (the first part is the same as in comment 3, but I repeated it here for clarity): 1. Open a new tab and type "about:config" in the URL bar. 2. Search for "app.update.log" and set it to "true". 3. Restart Firefox. 4. Open the "about" dialog. 5. Open Tools > Web Developer > Browser Console 6. Look for a URL that looks similar to: https://aus4.mozilla.org/update/3/Firefox/41.0.2/20151014143721/WINNT_x86-msvc/de/release/Windows_NT%2010.0.0.0%20(x64)/default/default/update.xml?force=1 7. Open Tools > Web Developer > Network 8. Copy the URL from point 6, enter it in the URL bar of the current tab and hit enter. Based on your comment 17 I'm assuming this will show an empty xml. 9. In the Network tool, select the request to the xml file (should be at the bottom of all the requests). 10. With the xml request selected, click on the "Response" tab on the right side. Please copy the URL from step 6 and the contents from the "Response" tab in the network tool. Thanks!

Hi Stephen, thank you very very much for your help so far! My update link is the following: https://aus5.mozilla.org/update/3/Firefox/43.0/20151208100201/WINNT_x86-msvc-x64/de/release/Windows_NT%2010.0.0.0%20(x64)/default/default/update.xml?force=1 The content of the "response" tab in the network analysis tool: <?xml version="1.0"?> <updates> </updates> BTW: If I open your link... the xml is not empty.

Interesting, based on the URL it looks like you're already on Firefox 43, which is the latest version. So the update mechanism seems to have worked. Is there a reason why you expected this xml file to not be empty? The update.xml file will only contain update information when there's actually an update available.

Yes, I'm on 43, but _just_ because I used the safemode trick again. With your link; well I thought something would be completely broken, so this link should have been empty, too.

Would you be able to return to version 42 and run through another update attempt? You can download version 42 here: https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/42.0/win32/de/Firefox%20Setup%2042.0.exe Then, simply run through the steps in comment 18 again. Once you're done, please copy everything starting with "AUS:" from step 5, the URL from step 6 and the contents from the "Response" tab in the network tool in step 10. The main goal is to see if there has been any change in behavior after uninstalling Youtube Unblocker. Thanks!

Well, today 43.0.1 was released and I got it! So it seems that the problem has been resolved so far. Again: Thank you very much!

The "youtube unblocker" add-on installed a hidden malicious add-on via a vulnerability in the add-on code. That malicious add-on breaks all kinds of stuff, for example updating of Firefox or updating the blocklist. It also tries to download further malicious software. I strongly advise to throw away your entire Firefox profile and do a thorough system check and virus scan!
