Wrong sample document in Description step 1.
Correct one is Attachment 8688879 [details] for Bug 1224578

Can be reproduced easily with mailing list subscription at <http://lists.freifunk.net/mailman/listinfo/braunschweig-freifunk.net>
Steps how to reproduce with SeaMonkey German 2.39 final Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:42.0 from official download area) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/42.0 Build 20151103191810 (Classic Theme) on German WIN7 64bit: 1. With SM e-mail-client IMAP account receive an e-mail like Attachment 8688918 [details] for Bug 1224578 Bug: in Threads Pane "Attachments" Column shows a paperclip what indicates an attachment, but the multipart message only contains a text block Additional info: a) Such e-mails often are created by "Machines", so I see such e-mails sent by SBC- and Phoenix PLC ass error alarms. b) an other source for such e-mails might be software creating mass e-mails for invoice sending or similar as we see in Bug 1224578 c) E-mails showing paperclip in SM do not show the attachment indicator in TB 45.0a1 (2015-11-18). I can't remember whether there might have been the paperclips in earlier TB versions d) currently I do not know a source for such e-mails to make this one reproducible easily, but I can send such e-mails if required for research. e) this one might be about the same problem as "Bug 302864 - multipart/mixed messages have attachment icon, but parts are 'inline'" But discussion there was a little controversial and the involved messages not exactly the same as the ones for what I observe the problem. @wmwalch@netscape.net This effect is misleading you that you think your received e-mails might have lost attachments.
f) Paperclip symbol vanishes in the moment when you click the message in the Threads Pane the first time g) due to my test result Version -> 2.0 A possibility to show the effect is: 10. Open SM version not affected by Bug 684924 (I tested 2.0.0) you can download old portable SM versions from <http://sourceforge.net/projects/portableapps/files/SeaMonkey%20Portable/>, but test also should work with Version from <http://www.seamonkey-project.org/releases/> 11. If necessary ake visible "Attachment" column in Threads Pane 12. Open HDD folder containing downloaded Attachment 8688879 [details] for Bug 1224578 13. Drag and drop .eml to trash folder of an existing IMAP account » Paperclip icon showed until first click on e-mail in Threads Pane

h) Also REPRODUCIBLE with English SeaMonkey 2.41a1 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:44.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/44.0 Build 20151103003001 (Classic Theme) on VirtualBox Ubuntu 14 For My tests I added an IMAP account existing on my email service provider's sever to SM. After e-mails have been downloaded to SM account they all showed the paperclip-icon for those typical machine created e-mails So Os -> All
OS: Windows 7 → All

(Commenting on User Story) I also can reproduce that phenomenon with subscribing mailing list "braunschweig@freifunk.net" for a POP3-account (plain text by default, view as plain text or original html does not matter) at <http://lists.freifunk.net/mailman/listinfo/braunschweig-freifunk.net> Some of the postings show the paperclip because the postings contains a signature, but others (like "Re: [freifunk-bs] mehr ESSIDs" by Matthias Kramer 24.11.2015 09:46 +0100)
