Steps to reproduce:

Just reply to newgroups threads on a very regular basis.


Actual results:

All replies "lose context" in the sense that they are one level deeper than the original post. This is confirmed using other readers such as LiveMail. Hearsay suggests Thunderbird used to get it right but I'm a recent convert.


Expected results:

Well, if I reply to something (say) three levels "into the thread" it should be 4 levels in and hanging-off the actual post I'm replying to. Not way down the bottom and out of context?

Would be lovely if you fixed this - my only serious annoyance with TB.

What are your View > Sort By settings in Thunderbird?

In my testing, the default for newsgroups is Order Received, Ascending, Threaded.

But it's not a display issue? Any reply in recent versions of Thunderbird (don't know when it started) always appears at the "end" of the thread, regardless of the 'context' - sorry if I'm not explaining that well...

I came across a list of 639 Untriaged bugs and am trying to determine what component this would fall under and confirm the bug. Also if it is similar to what I see with losing sort order in my Thunderbird's.

So far I can't confirm it. You may want to change Component: Untriaged to Mail Window Front End.

I'm confused by you saying it is confirmed by Live Mail. You are therefore implying that Thunderbird sends the messages incorrectly?

Yes. I participate in groups where people are using Live Mail, 40Tude(?), etc and TB. Everyone using TB sees all their posts appear at the 'end' of the thread as I tried to explain above. They all appear as a follow-up to the original post, even if you're trying to reply in context elsewhere in the thread. 

Could it be the server software (these are not public newsgroups). But people are saying TB used to work fine...

I made several posts in a test newsgroup following your posting order and can't duplicate. 

I don't think it is a Thunderbird issue.

You're right. I tried news.grc.com and it worked fine.
