From Bugzilla Helper:
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:0.9.8+) Gecko/20020131
BuildID: 2002013108
If the sidebar is closed (by clicking the X in the
upper right corner of the sidebar), then the
sidebar fe-appears spontaneously after executing
a search in the main browser window, if
the sidebar formerly displayed search results.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.Open the sidebar, display Search results,
and set the Search Engines to enable Google
2.Click the X to close the sidebar.
3.In the main window, go to www.google.com
4.Search for something
Actual Results: The side-bar re-opens itself
Expected Results: The sidebar should stay closed until the user
asks for it again (via View->Sidebar)
Do you have the "Open the Search tab in the Sidebar when search results are
available" pref checked in Preferences > Navigator > Internet Search?

See comment 1. This is by design.

Shouldn't we have at least waited for the reporter to answer my question in
comment 1?

actually, we took a shot at this problem today in a sidebar discussion. we
would like to offer users to opt out before we pop open a user closed side bar
as generally policy for all sidebar behavior - including search. this might be
realized with some sort of new unobtrusive notification blurb, something like on
Windows/Mac IE. so perhaps we open a new bug for the feature, and mark this
dependent on it?
Yes, I did have
"Open the Search tab in the Sidebar when search results are
available" pref checked.
I thought this meant to select the Search tab in the sidebar,
not open the whole sidebar if it was closed.
