choosing a previous month in history still shows most recent results
I think you are being confused by the Most Recent visit column, that is the global most recent visit, not the most recent visit in the selected month. That means the page has been visited that month, but it was also visited recently and the most recent visit date is reported there)
i understand, although for me it defies the principle of least surprise
