Details

We still have three fully spec'd Mac Pro machines in the QA lab. Those we want to hand-over to the iOS team. As agreed via email the machines will stay in the QA lab for now with the option to get moved to the colo in the foreseeable future. Machine details: 10.252.73.47 qa-horus 10.252.73.48 qa-set 10.252.73.49 qa-masterblaster We had networking issues with qa-horus and qa-set. Nils thankfully looked at those two machines and noticed that they all have two ethernet interfaces and for the two affected machines the cable was connected to the wrong port. Changing it actually fixed the connection problems. Stefan, as of right now VMWare Fusion is installed on them. I assume that you don't need that so I will clean it up?

I am assuming these machines will need to be upgraded to El Capitan and Xcode 7.2. I am willing to do that over the holidays after any cleanup is done.
This is fantastic! We so badly need some infrastructure. You have no idea how much you are helping us :-) Can they all be upgraded to a clean copy of 10.11? No need for VMWare. if we can remote into them then we can install the tools we need. Can we hook them up to LDAP so that it is easy for my team to login? If not then that is fine and we can just create some accounts manually.
We don't have any boots on the ground in MTV2, so we are going to have to upgrade them to 10.11 remotely. We tend to use a shared account, so this is not on LDAP. Local accounts can be created. Next week, I will start upgrading them.
@Syd I'm in the office. I can install 10.11 on them if that helps. In my experience OS X installs usually don't need much baby sitting, so I can walk by every now and then and check their progress. Any special instructions on how to do a clean install?
After downloading the installer from the Mac App Store, the installer should give you the option of going into Disk Utility. From there you can erase the drive and perform the install. Go ahead use a standard QA-user account name and password. Other accounts will be added later. Be sure and set "Remote Login" and "Screen Sharing" in the sharing preferences. Thanks!
So qa-horus is again no longer reachable. Did someone turn it off or has the IP been changed? Beside that I prepared qa-masterblaster for a re-install. You can login via mozilla/mozilla. Feel free to wipe out everything.

qa-hours lost network connectivity because the Ethernet cable in use has the plastic nose missing which is suppose to hold the cable in the Ethernet port. So if something slightly touches the cable it can easily move and then the Mac looses its network. I'll check if I can swap out the cable. I started the re-installation already. Ran into some issues regarding passwords on two of the machines. Asked whimboo via email for help with the passwords.

We clarified on IRC that we want to go ahead with a single box right now. Just to ensure that it will work for the iOS team. If that is the case and they need more machines, we can easily update the other two boxes too.
Sorry forgot to put an update here earlier: qa-masterblaster is up and running with a fresh install of El Capitan. It should be still running on the same IP address as before. "Screen sharing" is enabled. I forgot to enable "Remote Login". Can do that tomorrow if needed. Stefan: is there anyone in the iOS team in the MV office, so I could show him/her the machine to easy future changes or debugging of the machine?
Flags: needinfo?(sarentz)
Sorry forgot to add: qa-masterblaster is not hocked up to LDAP yet. Just one single account 'Mozilla QA' (mozillaqa) with the typical default password.
I can't ping the machine by IP address, and I must not have the fully qualified domain-name correct: Syd-Polks-Mozilla-MBP:testmozharness spolk$ ping qa-masterblaster.qa.mtv2.mozilla.com ping: cannot resolve qa-masterblaster.qa.mtv2.mozilla.com: Unknown host Syd-Polks-Mozilla-MBP:testmozharness spolk$ ping 10.252.73.49 PING 10.252.73.49 (10.252.73.49): 56 data bytes Request timeout for icmp_seq 0 Request timeout for icmp_seq 1 ^C --- 10.252.73.49 ping statistics --- I think that the machine is asleep. Nils, could you please go wake it up, and then go into Energy System Settings, and tell it never to sleep? I can ping the other machines: Syd-Polks-Mozilla-MBP:testmozharness spolk$ ping 10.252.73.48 PING 10.252.73.48 (10.252.73.48): 56 data bytes 64 bytes from 10.252.73.48: icmp_seq=0 ttl=59 time=62.086 ms ^C --- 10.252.73.48 ping statistics --- 1 packets transmitted, 1 packets received, 0.0% packet loss round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 62.086/62.086/62.086/0.000 ms Syd-Polks-Mozilla-MBP:testmozharness spolk$ They don't appear to have real domain names: Syd-Polks-Mozilla-MBP:testmozharness spolk$ ping qa-horus.mozilla.com ping: cannot resolve qa-horus.mozilla.com: Unknown host Syd-Polks-Mozilla-MBP:testmozharness spolk$ ping qa-horus.mtv2.mozilla.com ping: cannot resolve qa-horus.mtv2.mozilla.com: Unknown host Syd-Polks-Mozilla-MBP:testmozharness spolk$ ping qa-horus.qa.mtv2.mozilla.com ping: cannot resolve qa-horus.qa.mtv2.mozilla.com: Unknown host Syd-Polks-Mozilla-MBP:testmozharness spolk$ Other machines in the lab do: Syd-Polks-Mozilla-MBP:testmozharness spolk$ ping pf-jenkins.qa.mtv2.mozilla.com PING pf-jenkins.qa.mtv2.mozilla.com (10.252.73.218): 56 data bytes 64 bytes from 10.252.73.218: icmp_seq=0 ttl=59 time=63.330 ms ^C --- pf-jenkins.qa.mtv2.mozilla.com ping statistics --- 1 packets transmitted, 1 packets received, 0.0% packet loss round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 63.330/63.330/63.330/0.000 ms Syd-Polks-Mozilla-MBP:testmozharness spolk$

Machine was sleeping pretty well. I just turned off all the power management and turned on the remote login as well.
Flags: needinfo?(drno)
Just a quick note that we are using the machine. We are running builds on it. At what point should we talk about moving this to a more permanent location? Also, I would love to adopt one more of these. Is that possible?
Flags: needinfo?(sarentz)
If you need these to be moved into a data center, you need to start a discussion with the network ops guys. This is a secure badge-only location in the MTV2 campus, but does not have UPS or backups. As for getting another machine, let me ping some people.
Stefan, do you need only one or would you also have usage for the other two? We really don't need them.
This was actually done already a while ago. Stephan and his team are happy!
