User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; WOW64; rv:43.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/43.0 Build ID: 20151221130713 Steps to reproduce: Problem whenThunderbird 38.5.0 is installed with module Lighting 4.0.5. (automatic updates are activated). I ran the safe mode thunderbird -safe-mode, TB works OK. Also if I deactivate LIGHTNING TB works as usual. Actual results: I suppose it happened after the automatic update of Thunderbird or Lightning (don't know which was updated first). The problem is, the messages cannot be seen (there is no message pane), and the sub-menus of TB don't open. If I do: "? -> restart with deactivated modules", nothing happens. Any other "tools" menu command don't open menus. Expected results: User should the see messages (emails), and actions on "tools" menu should result in actions.

Can you open the error console (ctrl+shift+j)? Do you get any messages in there when expiriencing the issue? What other addons do you have installed and active? Is your Windows profile local or synced to a domain server?

(ctrl+shift+j) has no effect. No messages are shown. Local profile in user folder. Addons: Lightning 4.0.5 LookOut 1.2.13 Mail Merge 4.3.0 Simple Locale Switcher 0.9 Stationery 0.8.6.2 At first I switched off every apps one by one, the last being Lightning. Didn't work well until I deactivated Lightning. Hope this helps.

remark: When Lightning is reactivated and TB restarts (but does not work correctly), the "Gestionnaire de Module" folder icon turns and turns again.
Complement for Comment 3: you can see on my first attachement that the icons in "bad" condition (left part of the image) are not OK.
Thanks. That looks like you ran into the known Lightning update issue referenced above. There are already serveral bugs for this. I assume you installed the other addons regulary using the addon manager on your own or are they distributed with Thunderbird by your organization (if any)? Is your file system for the partition(s) for both, TB installation location and TB profile location NTFS? As a workaround, you can copy {TB-installation}/distribution/extensions/{e2fda1a4-762b-4020-b5ad-a41df1933103}/chrome.manifest to {TB-profile}/extensions/{e2fda1a4-762b-4020-b5ad-a41df1933103}/chrome.manifest After a restart it should work again as expected.

I can confirm this bug. We've had it with the last two Thunderbird Updates. Other bug reports with the same issue: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1211160 https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1211291 Description & solution: After the update process Thunderbird opens, but you can't click on any folders and you can't read e-mails. You have to start Thunderbird in save mode, remove the current Lightning plugin and install Lightning from https://addons.mozilla.org. This newly installed Lightning has a lower version number than the Lightning which comes with the Thunderbird Update. After restarting Thunderbird it everything works fine. All problematic Thunderbird installations are used within an Active Directory Profile with Windows 7 or Windows 8.

(In reply to Wayne Mery (:wsmwk, use Needinfo for questions) from comment #6) > > Is your file system for the partition(s) for both, TB installation location and TB profile location NTFS? > > tigny? sorry for late answer. Yes, all is on one NTFS partition.

Today I saw that Thunderbird is now 38.5.1 (was 38.5.0) and Lightning 4.0.5.1 (was 4.0.5), there is no more bug. Thank you for the fix.
(In reply to tigny from comment #10) > Today I saw that Thunderbird is now 38.5.1 (was 38.5.0) and Lightning > 4.0.5.1 (was 4.0.5), there is no more bug. This is actually pretty interesting. I did not upload 4.0.5.1 as the AMO version of 4.0.5 as I did with 4.0.4.1. An update from the AMO version to the tb-distributed version seems to fail, but by this comment an update from tb-distributed to tb-distributed seems to fix it.
This would not be suprising if this was an update from a working 4.0.5 to 4.0.5.1 (and rather not a fix but a situation the issue should not reoccur). Tigny, what did you do to make TB working again after experiencing the issue? Did you follow the advice in comment 5 or downgrade Lightning to 4.0.4.1? If the former, what is the current timestamp of chrome.manifest file in the Lightning directory within the TB profile?
