User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.0; rv:43.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/43.0
Build ID: 20151216175450

Steps to reproduce:

Feedback.
Updated to Thunderbird 38.5
Using windows Vista
Open 'Write' window.
In contacts sidebar select 'All Address Books'
Close Write window.
Exit Thunderbird.

Restart thunderbird.
Open 'Write' window.

Actual results:

Test results on my Windows Vista OS:

If I select 'All Address Books' - it is never remembered when I exit thunderbird, instead it remembers 'Personal Address book'. It is only remembered if I exit 'Write' window and reopen in the same session.

If I select 'Collected Addresses' or 'Personal Address Book'- it is remembered when I exit thunderbird.

If I select a created address book called eg:'Business' - it is remembered when I exit thunderbird.

Expected results:

Expected 'All Address Books' to be auto selected / remembered and displaying in the 'Contacts Sidebar'

So basically, if anyone actually wanted to use the 'All Address books' option then they are scuppered.
If they want to use a real address book then Thunderbird works as expected.

Please read the comment at this link.
This person suddenly is stuck on 'collected addresses', but they want to use 'All Address Books'.
This occurs on both Apple iMac and Windows 8.1,

We appreciate the work to try to fix, but it is not correct yet.
Suyash, can you look into reproducing/fixing this?

Yes, this can be reproduced, but you must restart TB to see if the selection was really preserved.

Hello Suyash, can you try to fix this?

(Fyi, I've started to fix similar bug 1177706 in bug 1308776).

Thunderbird still does not save the Address Book selection if "All Address Books" is chosen.

"All Address Books" is only saved after exiting the Compose window, NOT after exiting Thunderbird!

This means for people like myself, who want "All Address Books" selected all the time, Thunderbird no longer allows us to do that, whereas it used to do it a few years ago by default.

I am using an iMac computer running Thunderbird 45.7.1 under OS X 10.9.5. My wife is experiencing the same issue on a Toshiba laptop running the latest release of Thunderbird under Windows 10.
The latest release of Thunderbird (52.0) does not save the "All Address Books" selection at all, not even after exiting the Compose window.

This is a step backward, not forward......

Windows 10 TB version 91.3.2
UPdate testing result

Menu app icon > Preferences > Composition
Default startup directory in the address book window - choose from list

Whatever address book is selected including 'All Address Books' then this is the default choice whenever I open a Write message to compose.
If my choice was 'last used directory', then whatever address book was last selected in Write - Contacts Sidebar address book option - that option will be offered upon next opening of Write even if I exit thunderbird, restart and open Write.

Findings: I cannot reproduce this error in version 91.3.2

If others agree then I suggest we change this to bug fixed.
