Edit->Mail & Newsgroup account Settings->Add Account
   ISP or email provider
   (enter mail info)
   (Both POP and IMAP)

Enter server name:
    Invariably get the dialog:
        Alert: Please enter a valid host name
    No matter what string is entered, whether valid hostname,
    IP address, or whatnot.

This renders the mail application rather useless.

Reporter: Always add the build ID in a bug report:

If you see this with 0.9.8 and you can enter something like mail.epost.de, than try 
it with a new profile (run "mozilla -profilemanager")
You haven't installed Mozilla over an older build ?
