Apprunner doesn't start up. It says "register filter service", then "***
Registering html library". After that, it just freezes up. I've left it running
for a few minutes and nothing happens. This is on a brand new Compaq Armada 7400
laptop. Using Windows 98 Second Edition.
Summary: Apprunner doesn't start
Please read http://www.mozilla.org/quality/bug-writing-guidelines.html
before submitting bugs.

Details missed:
- Summary (I'm adding one right now.)
- Apprunner version.

Also it was the first start or did it crashed before that
and you couldn't restart?
If so you could try to delete component.reg from the mozilla directory.
Or did you use previous versions?
If so you may try to delete c:\windows\mozregistry.dat or possibly
your profile directory (worst case)

Did you try killing the beast and restarting to see if it happens
for the second time? (and what it prints that time)
Additional info via email from ed:

Sorry I left out those details, didn't realize. I'm using Milestone
8.5. I tried it about 4 times so far, same results every time. I
haven't run any other verisons on this computer. I don't have a file
called mozregistry.dat anywhere on my computer. I just tried deleting
component.reg, and then it got this far:

register filter service
*** Registering html library
Reading file...
Reading file...
Reading file...Done
Reading file...Done
Reading file...
CSSLoader::LoadAgentSheet - failed to get converter stream
open of resource:/res/ua.css failed: error=80500001

At this point, I have a white window on screen that says CreateProfile
Wizard in the title bar. It appears to be frozen. I just closed it, and
now it won't restart. The mouse cursor changes to busy as if it was
loading, then the apprunner window flashes onscreen for a fraction of a
second then goes away. I deleted component.reg again, and now it
appears to be working. I have a Create Profile window now. I was able
to create a profile, but when I went to edit preferences to set my
proxy server, it wouldn't open the Preferences window. Instead it
opened up a new, smaller window with the same content as the browser
window, and the only UI in it that responded was the close button. Just
tried again, same thing. Deleted the component.reg file and tried
again, same thing.

claudius...do you have access to machine with Win98 Second Edition. Please use
8.5 Win32 build at:
http://www.mozilla.org/projects/seamonkey/release-notes/
And let us know if this works. Thanks!
M9 started without problems. I then deleted component.reg and mozregistry.dat
and tried it again to ensure it would work, and it did. I was able to open the
Preferences dialog ok in this build. However, when I tried to view web pages,
they appeared to load, and I got a time to render displayed at the bottom of the
screen, however, nothing displayed in the browser window. My roommate tried M9
on his identical laptop, and he had the exact same results. Started fine, but
couldn't display any pages.

Resolution: --- → WORKSFORME
claudius and cpratt worked on this this morning. Here are our results:

1 - The 8.5 release appears to no longer be available. It was not available on
sweetlou.mcom.com (the Netscape internal ftp server), and it was not available
on ftp.mozilla.org. The link given in this bug report to the 8.5 release notes
does not provide a link to a 8.5 binary (presumably as it's been replaced by M9
binaries).
2 - In our professional opinion, this bug is one of many we've seen that
describes problems with Apprunner not launching on specific Windows
configurations. All such bugs have been closed as worksforme historically, and
we do not believe that this bug is any different.
3 - Using Netscape/AOL's sole licensed copy of Windows 98 Second Edition, we
were not able to reproduce this error on the current M10 build.
4 - Finally, the reporter of this bug now has the application launching
correctly. (In answer to the problem of the app not loading pages, please
remember in order for that to work correctly, you must quit the app after
launching it and restart the app. Pages should load correctly after that.)

Resolving as worksforme and verifying.
